Mechanical Variable Valve Actuation Systems for Motorcycle Engines
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper summarizes the results of design of new mechanical variable valve actuation (hereafter VVA) systems, developed for high performance motorcycle engines, at University of Napoli Federico II, Department of Industrial Engineering–Section Mechanics and Energy (hereafter DiME). In addition to a first simple (and limited) system used just as a model for the previous analysis, the work has evolved through three basic steps leading to three types of VVA systems, all mechanical systems (as defined in literature and described later). The study has been conducted implementing a numerical procedure specifically designed to determine cam profile and kinematic and dynamic characteristics of the whole system, starting from some data (as described in the paper). The model has been validated against the conventional timing system using kinematic simulations. Results of the numerical procedure verify the validity of the VVA systems and particularly a better performance of the last one, in spite of its higher complexity.

Benefits of the Electromagnetic Actuated Valve Train in Gasoline Engine Application
Engines equipped with camless valve trains will have greater space for performance optimization. In this paper, based on the electromagnetic actuated valve train system, one-dimensional and three-dimensional simulation models on engine thermodynamic cycle and in-cylinder charge motion are established, respectively. With the application of early-intake-valve closing (EIVC) strategy, unthrottled l...
متن کاملVariable Valve Actuation Systems for Environmentally Friendly Engines
INTRODUCTION VEHICLE engines have made remarkable progress since they first appeared and the operating range of engines in terms of rpm (revolutions per minute) and torque have expanded significantly. However, optimum engine design becomes difficult if the operation timing of the engine valves is fixed. For this reason, variable valve actuation has been used to optimize the valve timing in resp...

This experimental work was concerned with comparison of inlet valve actuation strategies in a thermodynamic single cylinder spark ignition research engine equipped with a mechanical fully variable valvetrain on both the inlet and exhaust. The research involved study of the effects of the valvetrain on combustion, fuel economy and emissions when used to achieve variable valve timing alone and wh...
متن کاملA New Electromagnetic Valve Actuator
In conventional internal combustion (IC) engines, engine valve displacements are fixed relative to crankshaft position. If these valves are actuated as a variable function of crankshaft angle, significant improvements in fuel economy can be achieved. Existing electromagnetically actuated variable-valve-timing (VVT) systems characteristically use springs to provide the large inertial power to mo...

The production of torque and pollutants of Variable Valve Actuation equipped internal combustion engines found in the automotive industry (both Diesel and gasoline engines) is studied. Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) is a technology which has been introduced to optimize engine efficiency at steady-states covering a wide range of operating conditions. In more details, the outcome of the internal ...
